Before the development

The clients wanted to knock through the wall between the lounge and dining room to create a larger family space. They also wanted a new heating solution, as they had to rely on two real fires for additional heat when it was really cold.

Lack of storage was also a major issue so they wanted lots of storage to be included in the new design. Inspired by their holidays in Asia, the clients wanted the new design to evoke that sense of calm and style. Building control was applied for and attained to knock down the wall between the lounge and the dining room before any works began.

What we did

The wall between the lounge and dining room was removed and a new steel support beam was installed. Before we re plastered the opening, we installed LED lights in the void of the beam. Bespoke shelving was installed round the opening for books, photographs and ornaments. Both Victorian fireplaces were removed and open grate real fires installed with log storage beneath. The chimneybreasts were tiled with slate mosaics creating strong feature fireplaces.

A log store was installed in the alcove to the right of the lounge fireplace with LED lighting mood lighting. Shelving was added to the left alcove, to house media storage and new audiovisual equipment, wired through the chimneybreast to the TV, which was placed centre above the fireplace. All wires were integrated within the plasterwork.

A further shelving area was installed in the dining room alcove, to house the family's personal filing, computer and media accessories. Doors were made, stained to match the floor and added to both alcoves.

The wooden floor was re furbished with a dark oak stain; iconic non-random Chandeliers were installed on dimmer switches. We decorated with grayed off neutrals and featured Brian Yates wallpaper in the hall. We added key pieces of furniture e.g. Eames chair and footstool, Eames office chair, Graham and Greene desk. We sourced an amazing leather casual 'L' shaped sofa perfect for all the family. Accessorized with Asian art and accessories, installed gunmetal black sockets and light controls. . To improve the heating in the room, we installed water based under floor heating at the beginning of the job when the wood flooring was removed.

The result

A larger relaxing, warm, calm space that all the family can enjoy.
